Distance vs Car Gas Light

It might be tempting to drive while your car is low on fuel; after all, you’ll be able to get your money’s worth.

However, you’ll want to avoid fully emptying your tank as it can present issues and complications with your fuel tank if you do it repeatedly.

What does the fuel light mean?

The purpose of the fuel light is to show that the fuel levels are running low in your tank in terms of the amount; there isn’t a concrete answer. Still, it’s estimated that the fuel light is activated when there’s between 15% and 10% of the tank’s capacity left.

What does it mean if it’s flashing?

When the fuel light starts flashing, it means that your car’s fuel levels are running dangerously low and that you should find somewhere to fill up.

If you notice that the fuel light comes on while you have a full tank then there’s likely an issue with the fuel gauge, and you’ll need to book your car in with a technician to diagnose the problem.

How many miles can I drive on an empty tank?

There is no standard amount of miles since car specifications vary, however, you may be able to achieve between 30 and 50 miles.

Can it damage my engine if I drive on an empty tank?

Depending on the length of the journey and the distance to the next fuel station, it may be tempting to keep driving even if your fuel light is flashing. However, doing so has its disadvantages.

The fuel tank acts as a coolant for the electric pump motor, so if you drive on an empty tank, you risk the motor overheating and stopping working.

If you consistently drive on an empty tank, all the impurities and debris from burnt fuel will start to build up. This can lead to blockages to the engine and potential damage to the fuel tank itself, and the fuel pump. You may also notice a drop in the car’s performance.

What should I do if I can’t reach a petrol station?

If you don’t think you’ll be able to make it to the nearest petrol station, you should find a safe place to park and put on your hazard lights.

Should you run out of fuel on the motorway, get out of the car using the door furthest from the traffic and walk away from the hard shoulder and other vehicles.

If possible, you can try contacting someone to see if they can bring you a jerry can of fuel. If not, you can call a recovery service like the RAC on 03301 598 751.

Will I get fined for running out of fuel?

It’s not illegal to drive when low on fuel. But doing so can lead to careless or dangerous driving, such as stopping on the road and causing an obstruction, which could result in a £100 fine and three points on your licence

If driving on an empty tank leads to an accident, then you could be taken to court, issued nine points and face an unlimited fine.
